BLACK + WHITE
Curious as to why I have been exclusively posting in black and white on social media?
These days when I shoot, I mostly use my digital camera or my instant cameras to capture moments. Rewind time though, to when I first started taking pictures, I was using film. It was black and white. I was even developing and printing it myself.
When I was shooting in black and white, I looked at the world in black and white. In fact, I actually stopped seeing color, but rather, I saw only light. I was captivated by the light! I was fascinated with how light changed the meaning and the effect of the image. I would search for dark shadows or explore how highlights helped to frame one’s face. I studied the darks (blacks) in the image, but also examined the bright highlights (whites). But, what I still feel is the most important about those black and white images, are all those many shades of grey. Dark greys, medium greys, lighter shades, and even the palest of greys. It was all of these subtleties and complexities that fascinated me then, and to this day. Kind of similar to life, isn’t it?
In celebration of capturing the freshness of Spring’s light, try looking for contrast, shape and texture.
When taking black and white images, it is important to look at the tonal contrast to ensure your image is strong. If not, you will need to increase the contrast in your post production. Which you can even do on your phone.
The beauty of shooting black and white is that your images often remain timeless. I have often thought of a black and white image as a soulful image. It strips away the layers and highlights the soul.
Now, why don’t you go and try and see light too!
