The back-to-school season is upon us, and I can hardly believe my kiddos will be settling in to their classrooms again on Tuesday. I’m partly in shock over how fast time seems to be flying - it feels as if it were just yesterday when they entered the world.
I must be feeling a bit nostalgic, because I remember every year growing up my mom would take a first day of school picture of my sister and me. I even went and found these photos. She would do this in the same spot next to our house every year. She would want to showcase our new school clothes and mark this milestone. I look back at those pictures with the fondest memories of excitement of what the New Year had in store of us, but also what was the latest fashion in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
I encourage you all to snap that "first day of school" picture of your child. Whether it's kindergarten, first grade, or high school, you'll want to preserve that special day forever.
Below are a few tips on how on how to take a personalized pic!
1. The Before and After images- have a chalk board, piece of paper, or even cardboard and write something personal on it about your child. It could be their age, a special interest, or a favorite toy, and then do it again on the last day of school. My favorite one is asking my kids what they want to be when they grow up on the first day of school and then again on the last. My son wants to be an army man and my daughter an artist. I love these images and it is fun to see how much they have changed!
2. Props- I am a sucker for a prop, but especially for Back to School props. Whether it is an over-sized book bag, pencils, chalkboard, new school clothes – I love it all! I love incorporating these things into their photos too.
3. Location- My mom always took our pictures on the same side of the house every year, but you could take your’s in front of the school, walking to school if you walk, waiting for the school bus or getting on the school bus if you take the bus. It will be fun to compare them from year to year.
4. Posing- Capture meaningful images with just the right pose. My kids will often walk to school holding hands or my son puts his arm around my daughter. I know this will not last forever, so believe me when I tell you I take this picture every chance I get. Don’t forget to get in a picture together with your kiddos too! Your child will never be this age again, and neither will you. You may even want to take pictures of your kiddos with their friends or with their teacher.
